Fresno City Fire Department
400 Prevention Manual
SECTION 401.001 APPOINTMENT CANCELLATION
PURPOSE
This policy clarifies the Fresno Fire Department’s (FFD or Department) requirements
for the timely cancellation of, or request to change, scheduled new construction and
five-year test appointments.
APPLICATION
This policy applies to all contractors requesting to cancel or change a scheduled new
construction or five-year test appointment.
OPERATIONAL POLICY
This section intentionally left blank.
OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
In order to provide timely service to all contractors requesting inspections from the
Fire Prevention Division, new construction and five-year test appointments are
scheduled on a daily basis. As the Fire Prevention Division strives to provide more
efficient services, parameters need to be set regarding the cancellation of new
construction and five-year test appointments or requests to change an appointment to
a different permit. When a contractor does not cancel an appointment in a timely
manner, it limits the amount of time staff has to accommodate other contractors
requesting inspections. When a contractor changes an appointment at the last
minute, it causes additional work for staff that are preparing the inspection schedule
for the following day.
When a contractor determines they are not ready for an inspection or wants to change
a scheduled appointment to a different permit, the contractor shall notify the
Prevention Division by telephone or email. To avoid being charged additional fees,
the contractor is required to notify the Department by 12 p.m. (noon) one business
day prior to the scheduled appointment. If a contractor does not call or email within
this timeframe or is not ready for a scheduled inspection when an inspector arrives
at the location, a re-inspection fee will be charged in accordance with the FFD Policy
401.003, Re-inspection Fees and the currently adopted Master Fee Schedule.

INFORMATION
The demand for new construction and five-year test appointments and the delay to
obtain an appointment date continues to increase. This policy was created to resolve
some of the delays by addressing the issue of contractors cancelling appointments
without sufficient time for Department staff to fill these appointments. When this
occurs, it contributes to project delays. With sufficient notice, Department staff can
effectively schedule inspections, decreasing delays and utilizing all available
appointment times.
Additionally, when contractors change an appointment to a different permit number, it
creates additional work for staff. The additional work required impacts the
Department’s ability to efficiently respond to the needs of the public we serve.
