Johnson, Senior Administrative Clerk Section 207.007 Page 1 of 3 PURPOSE The purpose of this policy is to establish a guideline for the fire mechanic support or additional mechanic support of the Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department) during emergency operations or after-hours. APPLICATION Fire mechanic services are provided 24-hours each day by a designated on-call fire mechanic or lead worker. Company officers or acting company officers will consult with their respective battalion chief before contacting the on-call mechanic. OPERATIONAL POLICY This section intentionally left blank. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE During normal business hours, members are directed to contact the Fire Shop at 559-621-4212, or via the “business hours” cell phone number at 559-974-0282. Company officers or acting company officers will consult with their respective battalion chief before contacting the on-call mechanic. The on-call mechanic will be called when a repair issue arises which impacts the operational capabilities and safety of department apparatus and equipment, such as: 1. When an apparatus is damaged and needs to be towed. 2. When an apparatus is involved in a vehicle accident and needs a safe-to- drive inspection. 3. When an apparatus becomes stuck off road and needs to be towed. Section 207.007 Page 2 of 3 4. When the Department is critically low on reserve apparatus. PROCESS After hours, members must first contact their respective battalion chief to review the repair or service needed. Upon approval from the battalion chief, members may contact the on-call mechanic directly by calling 559-960-8197 or by contacting communications and requesting notification be made. ADDITIONAL FIRE MECHANIC SUPPORT A request for additional Fire Shop mechanic support may be excessive out-of- service apparatus or urgent incident support activities. Typical tasks may be, but are not limited to, transport of breathing air bottle support, movement of equipment, apparatus repair, or onsite refueling. The incident commander may request additional mechanics to be called out when needed. The first out on-call mechanic may request additional mechanics, when needed, with approval of the incident commander, any chief officer, or the shop supervisor. The call-out process will be handled by the first out on-call mechanic. When approved to make the request for additional help, the on-call mechanic will call out the appropriate number of mechanisms using the call-out list of mechanics based on who is most likely to arrive the fastest and then progress through the list until the appropriate number of mechanics is confirmed en route. Mechanics off sick or on light-duty are excluded. If the first call-out mechanic is unsuccessful making contact with an additional mechanic(s), he is to inform the incident commander and/or chief officer/shop supervisor. If necessary, mutual-aid mechanic support may be requested in the following order: 1. City of Fresno, Fleet Management Mechanics 2. City of Clovis, Fleet Maintenance/Fire Mechanic 3. CAL FIRE/Fresno County Fire Mechanics Unless otherwise directed by the incident commander, the first call-out mechanic will direct all duty assignments as the ground support unit leader. If the second call-out mechanic is a lead worker, the lead worker will assume the role of ground support unit leader. Section 207.007 Page 3 of 3 INFORMATION This section intentionally left blank.
