PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines for the repair and preventive
maintenance of Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department) diesel generators.
APPLICATION
This serves as a guideline to ensure all fire station generators used for emergency
situations are cared for properly, including tending to needed repairs and providing
preventative maintenance.
OPERATIONAL POLICY
This section left intentionally blank.
OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
The Department’s primary goal is to provide assistance to the citizens of the City of
Fresno (City) during their time of need. To help meet this goal, it is imperative
Department operations run smoothly, even during trying times, such as natural
disasters or civil unrest.
The Department currently has six (6) back-up diesel generators to provide power
during times of electrical outages. They are located at Department Headquarters
and Fire Stations 14, 15, 16, 17, and 19. The generators are programmed to
activate during a power outage. If there is an interruption to electrical service, the
generators come on within approximately eight (8) to ten (10) seconds.

To ensure the generators are maintained and remain in working order, the City’s
Transportation Department, Public Safety Fleet Division, Fire Shop is responsible for
repairs and preventive maintenance, including testing, inspections, and record
keeping. The Fire Shop supervisor serves as the primary contact for generator-
related issues, and the designated on-call mechanic serves as the after-hours and
weekend contact.
PROCESS
Station Members
Each Sunday, station members are to perform a brief visual inspection of the
generator and all associated control/annunciator panels looking for leaks, obvious
mechanical issues, flashing or activated codes/alarms, and appropriate fuel levels.
Note: The Fire Shop supervisor or on-call mechanic is to be notified when
the fuel level falls below three quarters (3/4) of a tank.
Station members may contact the Fire Shop or, after hours, their respective battalion
chief and request the designated on-duty mechanic be notified when the generator
activates for no apparent reason, fails to shut down once power is restored, requires
fuel or has any other repair or maintenance issues.
Note: Some generators automatically run a weekly test cycle.
The Fire Shop serves as the primary contact for scheduled or unscheduled
inspections by the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District (Valley Air
District) or any other agency.
A copy of all maintenance and testing is to be kept in a log book which remains with
the generator, in the control panel compartment, at all times.
