HomeMy WebLinkAbout203.010b - Infection Control Training STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES HEALTH AND SAFETY 203.010b INFECTION CONTROL TRAINING EFFECTIVE: AUGUST 2007 Current Revision Date: 5/16/19 Next Revision Date: 5/16/24 Author’s Name/Rank: Kevin Reynolds, Fire Captain Review Level: 1 Administrative Support: Christina Johnson, Senior Administrative Clerk Section 203.010b Page 1 of 3 PURPOSE The purpose of this procedure is to ensure members of the Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department) are current with infectious control standards when dealing with bloodborne or airborne pathogens. APPLICATION This section intentionally left blank. OPERATIONAL POLICY All members providing emergency services shall be required to complete: o Infection control training prior to the time of assignment to tasks where occupational exposure may occur o Refresher infection control training at least annually thereafter All infection control training materials shall be appropriate in content and vocabulary to the educational level, literacy, and language of members being trained. Training shall be in compliance with Cal OSHA, Section 5193 of Title 8, Bloodborne Pathogens and shall include: o An accessible copy of Cal OSHA, Section 5193 of Title 8 and an explanation of its contents o A general explanation of the epidemiology and symptoms of bloodborne diseases Section 203.010b Page 2 of 3 o An explanation of the modes of transmission of bloodborne pathogens o An explanation of the Department exposure control program and how the member can access a copy o An explanation of the appropriate methods for recognizing activities, which may involve exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials o Information on the types, proper use, location, removal, handling, decontamination, and disposal of personal protective equipment o An explanation of the basis for selection of personal protective equipment o Information on the Hepatitis B vaccine; its efficacy, safety, and the benefits of being vaccinated. Advertising the vaccination shall be provided at no charge. o Information on the appropriate actions to take and persons to contact in an emergency involving blood or other potentially infectious materials o An explanation of the procedure to follow if an exposure incident occurs, including the method of reporting the incident and the medical follow-up shall be made available o Information on the post-exposure evaluation and follow-up the Department is required to provide following an exposure incident o An explanation of the signs and labels and/or color coding required for bio-hazard materials; information on the proper storage and disposal of bio-hazard materials o Opportunity for interactive questions and answers Infection control trainers shall be knowledgeable in all program elements listed above, particularly as they relate to emergency services provided by the Department. Written records of all training sessions shall be maintained for three years after the date on which the training occurs. Training records shall include: o Dates of the training sessions Section 203.010b Page 3 of 3 o Contents or a summary of the training sessions o Names and qualifications of persons conducting the training o Names and job titles of all persons attending the training sessions OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE This section intentionally left blank.
