APPLICATION This policy applies to all sworn suppression members when on duty. OPERATIONAL POLICY Washer/extractors shall be utilized only for cleaning and/or sanitizing specified structure firefighting PPE ensemble components, wildland PPE garments, and nylon or polypropylene ropes. Uniforms, bedding, towels, or other soft goods are not to be washed in washer/extractors. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE The following procedures should be used when utilizing Milnor Model 30022T5X washer/extractors: Observe universal precautions when handling soiled or contaminated items. Follow manufacturer’s guidelines when using washer/extractors. Only soft, textile-based items are to be washed in washer/extractors. Do not place boots, gloves, SCBA facemasks, or non-textile helmet components (shell, eye protection, and ratcheting system) in washer/extractors. Washer/extractors should not be under or over-loaded. Maximum load weight is 60 pounds, and maximum load volume is 9 cubic feet. Minimum load is 3 structure firefighting jacket and/or pant liners or shells. Retired garments may be added to meet minimum load requirements; these items are available from the Supply Section. Garment shells and liners should be separated and washed only with like items. Retired liners can be added to meet minimum load requirements. Water temperatures should not exceed 105 degrees Fahrenheit. After cleaning, items should be air-dried away from direct sunlight and/or fluorescent light. Mechanical fans, blowers, or drying cabinets may be used to reduce drying time; air temperatures should not exceed 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Washer/Extractors are inspected, maintained, and repaired by a third-party vendor. Request for maintenance or repairs to washer/extractors are to be entered into Department RMS.
