APPLICATION There are two types of task books used to document training during and after an academy: Firefighter Trainee and Probationary Firefighter. At the completion of the academy and probationary period, it is incumbent upon the employee to ensure completion and request the Training Chief, or a designee signs off on the Office of the State Fire Marshal’s State Fire Training (SFT) task books for Firefighter I (FFI) and Firefighter II (FFII) certification. Task book copies will be kept in the employees training file and Learning Management System (LMS) where an employee can access and print the documents if needed. OPERATIONAL POLICY During the academy, each trainee is to receive a task book which must be completed to meet the requirements for graduation of an academy. Upon completion of the academy, firefighter trainees are promoted to firefighter and assigned a “probationary firefighter task book”, which must be completed during their probationary year. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE The Firefighter Trainee task book is aligned with and meets all requirements from SFT, FFI module, Wildland module, Hazmat module, and FFII required random skills. This task book also contains cross-referenced Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department) policies, Fire Engineering Handbook (FEH) chapters, and IPEs when applicable. This provides the academy instructors a reference point for internal documentation and training during an academy. It outlines the skills, policies, and chapters required to meet the qualifications for FFI and FFII. The academy task book is kept current by academy staff during the academy period. Once completed, the task book is added to the firefighter trainee’s training folder and kept as a historical record. The position of a probationary firefighter requires one year of probation per Fresno City Municipal Code. As a condition of employment, the probationary firefighter is required to complete a Probationary Firefighter Task Book, which is the Department’s method of documenting competency. Assigned company officers are expected to assist with the process of completing a task book, but the ultimate responsibility lies on the probationary firefighter. In the event the firefighter is having trouble completing the task book, he/she should contact the Training Division for assistance. The probationary firefighter is required to have the task book completed by the eleven (11) month exam and is required to bring the task book to the five (5) month exam for evaluation. By the five (5) month exam, the task book should be near 50% complete. If the task book is 100% complete and the probationary firefighter has passed the five (5) month exam, he/she may apply for a FFI certification through SFT after six months of employment as a firefighter. After successful completion of the task book and 12 months of employment, the probationary firefighter is qualified to apply for FFII certification. It is recommended both certifications be obtained by the employee for promotional purpose, but it is not a requirement for employment. PROCESS This section intentionally left blank.
