APPLICATION It is recommended the new instructors and previous instructors hold “Shift Change” and exchange information. If the opportunity to shadow a current academy is possible, that would be the best practice. Included are recommendations from the City Attorney that identify past challenges and recommendations for meeting those challenges. OPERATIONAL POLICY This section intentionally left blank. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE The Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department) Trainee Academy is designed to function as an Accredited Local Academy (ALA) that provides State Fire Training (SFT) Fire Fighter 1 curricula, with the option of including a National Registry Emergency Medical Technician course. The Department has chosen to modify its approach to the recruitment process to allow greater flexibility in how the Trainee Academy operates. The Department now has the option of hiring lateral firefighters and/or recent graduates of accredited academies to streamline the academy process and provide cost savings. The benefit of recruiting lateral firefighters and recent graduates are they come with a basic level of training and experience, thus requiring less academy time. The emphasis for trainees recruited using this methodology will be on refresher training and exposure to FFD specific topics related to equipment and policies. To facilitate hiring of lateral firefighters/recent graduates, a condensed academy delivery option is now available. Time constraints of the condensed academy option may limit the material covered and depth of instruction. Those time constraints drive the need for additional training delivery during probation. After graduation, probationary firefighters who attended a condensed academy may be required to attend training hosted or coordinated by the Training Division. Announcements for training are published in the monthly training plan and calendar. INFORMATION This section intentionally left blank. DEFINITIONS This section intentionally left blank.
