Garcia, Engineer Current Revision Date: 09/09/2022 Section 326.001 Next Revision (2) Date: 09/09/2025 Page 1 of 18 Fresno City Fire Department 300 Training and Equipment Manual Rescue Equipment SECTION 326.001 PROBATIONARY FIRE ENGINEER TASK BOOK PURPOSE This document outlines the knowledge, skills, and competencies required of a probationary engineer. APPLICATION The Probationary Fire Engineer Task Book is designed to assist the newly appointed engineer in developing the basic skills necessary to perform in a satisfactory manner as an engineer of the Fresno Fire Department. OPERATIONAL POLICY As part of the probationary period, the probationary engineer will be required, to have a captain or designee, sign off the listed subjects and skills of the task book. The task book is to be submitted to the Training Division prior to the end of the one- year probationary period. Probationary engineers are responsible for completing the “Performance Requirements for Probationary Engineers” agreement. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE Probationary engineers should learn the subjects listed in the task book and demonstrate competency in each area prior to the end of his/her one-year probationary period. Fire captains should evaluate the progress of the listed engineer subjects and/or skills. Any assistance requested by the probationary engineer should be provided by the personnel involved. Note: The individually mentioned tasks are a comprehensive list of tasks which are essential to successful completion of the engineer probationary period. Evaluations need not be performed in the sequence presented in the task book, nor is the probationary engineer limited to these subjects and tasks. The captain, as well as the probationary engineer, is encouraged to include subjects or tasks he/she feels need additional improvement. I will explain or demonstrate competency in all subjects listed in the probationary fire engineer task book prior to the end of my one-year probationary period. 2. I will enter my JAC training hours. 3. I will arrange an eight-hour tour of the Fire Department Shop during a scheduled Preventative Maintenance (PM) prior to the end of my probationary period. I will answer questions regarding Fire Department Shop operations while on this tour. 4. I will submit my probationary fire engineer task book to the Training Division prior to the end of my probationary period. 5. I will return Pumping and Aerial Apparatus Driver/Operator Handbook 3rd Ed. after my probationary period is complete. 6. I will successfully complete a Fresno Fire Department Engineer Academy within my probation, provided the class is scheduled and I have not already attended. I have read and understand the performance requirements for probationary engineer on which I will be evaluated.
