SECTION 327.001 PROBATIONARY FIRE CAPTAIN TASK BOOK
PURPOSE
This document outlines the knowledge, skills, and competencies required of a
probationary Fire Captain.
APPLICATION
The probationary Fire Captain task book is designed to assist the newly appointed
Fire Captain in developing the basic skills necessary to perform in a satisfactory
manner as a Fire Captain of the Fresno Fire Department.
OPERATIONAL POLICY
As part of the probationary period, the probationary Fire Captain will be required to
have a Battalion Chief or designee, sign off the listed subjects and skills of the task
book.
The task book is to be submitted to the Training Division prior to the end of the one-
year probationary period.
Probationary Fire Captains are responsible for completing the “Performance
Requirements for the Probationary Fire Captains” agreement.
OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
Probationary Fire Captains should learn the subjects listed in the task book and
demonstrate competency in each area prior to the end of his/her one-year
probationary period.
Battalion Chiefs should evaluate the progress of the listed Fire Captain subjects and/or
skills.

Any assistance requested by the probationary Fire Captain should be provided by the
personnel involved.
PROCESS
A Battalion Chief or designee is to sign off when the probationary Captain has
successfully demonstrated and met the intent of the individual identified task.
Note: The individually mentioned tasks are a comprehensive list of
the tasks which are essential to successful completion of the
Captains probationary period.
Evaluations need not be performed in the sequence presented in the task book, nor
is the probationary Captain limited to these subjects and tasks. A Battalion Chief, as
well as the probationary Captain, is encouraged to include subjects or tasks he/she
feels need additional improvement.
Upon completion of the Captain Probationary Task Book all the requirements for the
OSFM Company Officer Task Book Job Performance Requirements (JPR’s) will also
have been met. The OSFM has given permission for California Fire Agencies such
as the Fresno Fire Department to initiate task books. The task book can be found on
the following link. To complete the process for obtaining a Company Officer Certificate
through the OSFM please refer to the OSFM Website.
Note: The OSFM periodically updates and/or changes their
standards and procedures. The cross referenced JPR’s in
this document will need to be updated as the OSFM updates
their material.

For JPRs that are not part of a candidate’s regular work assignment or are a rare
event, the evaluator may develop a scenario or interview that supports the required
task and evaluate the candidate to the stated standard.

OSFM JOB PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENT
The candidate must complete each job performance requirement (JPR) in accordance
with the standards of the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) or the National Fire
Protection Association (NFPA), whichever is more restrictive.
All JPRs must be completed within a California fire agency or Accredited Regional
Training Program (ARTP).
For JPRs that are not part of a candidate’s regular work assignment or are a rare event,
the evaluator may develop a scenario or interview that supports the required task and
evaluate the candidate to the stated standard.
Each JPR shall be evaluated after the candidate’s fire chief initiates the task book.
