SECTION 313.006a SUPPLYING SMALL HANDLINES (IPE)
PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to evaluate standard operations for supplying water to 1"
Reel Lines, Jump Lines, and 1-1 /2" and 1-3/4" Cross lays.
APPLICATION
Individual performance evolutions (IPEs) are used to document skill level
performance.
OPERATIONAL POLICY
This section intentionally left blank.
OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
This section intentionally left blank.
PROCESS
Equipment Needed:
•Operators and firefighters are to wear helmets and gloves.
•Small hose line (1 ", 1-1/2", or 1-3/4") and nozzle.
•FFD pumping apparatus.
Task:
The operator is given a simulated scenario to charge the designated handline. Once
the flow has been established, adjust the pump throttle to the appropriate pressure for
the appropriate water flow.
Performance Outcome:
The candidate is to quickly and efficiently charge hand lines and provide them with
proper pressures to enable the fire attack crew(s) to immediately initiate fire attack.

Critical Errors:
If the candidate performs any of the following errors, the evolution is terminated as it
would be a failure of the current test attempt.
•Performed an unsafe act, which could have resulted in injury to
himself/herself, crew, or the public.
•Performed an act which did or could have damaged equipment.

Supplying Small Hand Lines
1 Prepare pumper to pump water.
2 Determine which hose line has been deployed.
3. Ensure all hose is clear of the bed.
4. Look for and remove any kinks of accessible hose.
5. Check/wait for visual or audible call for water from
firefiqhter at nozzle.
6. Confirm by shouting "water coming" to firefighters(s).
7. Locate appropriate discharge valve handle/controller
and associated discharge gauge.
8. Change hose line at a controlled rate.
9. Set appropriate discharqe pressure.
9a. Never allow discharge pressures to exceed target
pressure by more than 30 PSI.
9b. Observe hose line specific discharge gauge.
9c. Throttle up to correct discharge pressure as per the
FFD POG.
10. Properly set Pump Boss/Pressure Control Valve.
10a. Never allow discharge pressures to exceed more
than 30 PSI.
11. Check undercarriaqe for leaks.
12. Assess water supply/update command, as needed.
13. Observe the following: Water tank level, engine
temperature and oil pressure.
14. Note abnormal noises or concerns.
15. Additional Notes:
Critical Errors p *F p *F
1. Perform an unsafe act which could result in
injury to the member, crew, or the public.
2. Perform an act which did or could have damaged
equipment.
