HomeMy WebLinkAbout316.014 - Carry and Raise A 28-Foot Extension Effective Date: July 2021 Rene Gonzales, Firefighter Current Revision Date: 03/15/2024 Section 316.014 Next Revision (1) Date: 03/15/2026 Page 1 of 4 Fresno City Fire Department 300 Training and Equipment Manual SECTION 306.014 CARRY AND RAISE A 28-FOOT EXTENSION LADDER PURPOSE Ladders are an essential tool in fire ground operations used to gain access to roofs, windows, and assist in rescue operations for the Fresno Fire Department (FFD or Department). APPLICATION Individual Performance Evolutions (IPE) are used to document skill level performance. OPERATIONAL POLICY When performing IPE’s, members shall wear full personal protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus as determined by the IPE. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE Active members are to perform an (IPE) without any failures in task steps. PROCESS Equipment Needed: Two (2) firefighters in full personal protective equipment, two (2) SCBAs, one (1) 28- foot extension ladder, and one third-story window or landing. Task: Lift, carry, and raise a 28-foot extension ladder as part of a two-person company and place ladder at a pre-determined location. Performing the operation in reverse, the ladder is to be returned to the assigned area. Performance Outcome: The member, while operating on a simulated fire ground, can give commands to his/her company to lift, carry, and raise a 28-foot extension ladder safely to a designated location and return it to the assigned area. Note: The base firefighter is the one being evaluated. To be performed from the base of the ladder. Critical Errors: If the member performs any of the following errors, the evolution is to be terminated, resulting in a failure of the current test attempt. • Perform an unsafe act which could result in injury to himself/herself or the public. • Perform an act which did or could have damaged equipment. Remove ladder from apparatus. 2. Position self at base of ladder, instruct crew to appropriate positions. 3. Provide appropriate commands to lift, carry and spot the ladder. 4. Visually check work area for hazards and verbalize if area is safe to raise the ladder. 5. Spot the ladder and properly raise the ladder. 6. Rotate ladder if needed to assure halyard is towards objective. 7. Assure crew is ready to extend fly and verbalize “fingers and toes.” 8. Extend fly correctly with halyard to proper height. 9. Assure pawls lock. (Stated and visualized) 10. Properly lower ladder against stable wall or 11. Adjust to proper climbing angle and assure the points of contact. 12.
